The World Challenge is an
unofficial world record.
After months of compilation of data and the verification process done by the Guinness Book of Records, the results of the YMCA World Challenge could not be officially recognized by the entity since not all requirements could be met. The officials recognized the work done as impressive and suggested for us to try again in the future. The main issue on the establishment of the record was related to the witnesses presented by the local events, that did not meet the criteria. After 3 appeals the World Alliance decided not to continue with the process, because of the high costs associated and because the establishment of the record was not the main purpose of the YMCA World Challenge from its very beginning. The other way to attempt a world record would be to have Guinness representatives on site which is financially challenging given the reach of the event (close to 1,000 locations). The failure to obtain the official stamp of the Guinness Book of the records does not change the fact that on October 12, 2014, YMCA mobilized 432,000 people to celebrate our common work on youth empowerment. Announcement of Results - March 2013 It is our pleasure to inform that we finalized the counting process of the YMCA World Challenge. In October 13th, 85 countries were connected by the YMCA World Challenge in hundreds of local events. During that day we expressed to our communities what the YMCA is about and what we are doing to empower young people. This is the sleeping giant waking up and becoming more visible to us and to the outside world. We mobilised 432.000 people during those events. This is an extraordinary achievement for our first YMCA World Challenge. This number is the same as 11,000 buses full of people; 4,5 Maracanã Stadiums full of fans. This result comes from compilation of data sent via YMCA national offices and individual event registration forms. Around 50% of the events registered for the day have reported back. This makes us believe that the real number could be even higher, but we have to improve our collective commitment to reporting. Once more we would like to thank all YMCA Leaders involved in this project. Messages and photos continue to reach our office every day expressing how much fun we had by taking part in this pioneer initiative. Several YMCAs reported coverage from local and national media, fundraising, strengthening of relations with partners and much more. Now, our office is sending the documentation to the Guinness Book of Records. Our team is revising the event verification forms and validating it. Because of several forms not in conditions to be validated, the number of individuals shooting hoops will be substantially smaller than the total number mentioned above. This is just the beginning of our journey as a big collective to empower young people worldwide. If you have questions, please contact us at [email protected] |
